The project team continues to concentrate efforts on the spatial display of status and trends of resource conditions identified, and the filling of biodiversity data gaps with field surveys.

 

Project 1.2.1(b) JCU Williams, S. (2009) December Milestone Report

Project progress report - December 2009. Includes a summary of field sampling and monitoring of bird, reptile and microhylid frog species in the highlands of the Wet Tropics region, and a summary of an extension task which is sampling rainforest bird species outside of the Wet Tropics region to further current understanding of the role of climate as a driver of patterns of diversity and abundance in rainforest birds in general.

 

Project 1.2.1(b) JCU Williams, S. (2010) 'Biodiversity monitoring for climate change'

Final Report on Project Activities, June 2010. This document reports on fauna and weather station monitoring data collected as part of MTSRF Project 1.2.1 Extension (b). Microclimate data was collected from a region-wide network of 25 weather stations from 2006 to 2010. The data gained has been used to develop realistic estimates of microclimate exposure for the region and to identify cooler landscape 'refugia' and major microhabitat features that buffer exposure to extreme temperatures. This data has been used to evaluate vulnerability or resilience of species to extinction, evaluate the biodiversity values of climate change refugia, and improve niche models.

Project 2.5i.1 AIMS Brinkman, R. (2011) June Final Report

This final project report for 2.5i.1 describes how this project has successfully developed pilot hydrodynamic models at two nested levels. A regional model covers the continental shelf from Moreton Bay to the mainland of Papua New Guinea, extending eastwards into the Coral Sea. This regional model for the Great Barrier Reef is nested within an operational global circulation model. A more finely resolved model (the shelf model) is nested within the regional model to cover the continental shelf areas and the adjoining tract of the Coral Sea.

 

Project 2.5i.1 AIMS Schiller, A. (2008) Instrument Array Summary - January 2008 Milestone Report

A project progress report detailing a total of sixty-nine oceanographic instruments of which were deployed for this experiment throughout the Heron Island region. The deployments and recoveries took place during four field trip periods between the months of August 2004 and April 2006. Many instruments were positioned in two or more locations during the study. The following figures and tables describe the oceanographic instruments that were deployed for, usually, six months at a time.

 

Project 2.5i.2 UQ Hoegh-Guldberg, O. (2009) January Milestone Report

Project progress report - 31 January 2009. Includes detailed report on project results to date under three broad categories: (a) Thresholds and coral response; (b) Heritability and genetics; and (c) Diversity of naturally occurring symbiont types. Includes coral bleaching risk output reports that have been assembled from an array of satellite and in situ data, as well as selected bleaching forecast models. An example of a brief analysis of these reports is included in graphic format.

Project 2.5i.4 AIMS Wooldridge, S. (2007) November Milestone Report

A project milestone report describing the methodology developed to facilitate the spatial linkage between end-of-catchment water quality scenarios, and the follow-on flood plume dilution across the GBR lagoon, the findings from a high level socio-economic and demographic characterisation of the region using ABS, OESR and other statistical sources, a present summary from workshop on the spatial linkage model and its outputs with end users and define targets based on reef outcomes (e.g. Reef Partnership and GBRMPA)and a summary of communication activities undertaken to date by the project team and a schedule of future communication activities.

 

Project 2.5i.4 AIMS Wooldridge, S. (2009) June Milestone Report

Project progress report to June 2009, plus two attachments: (a) a report highlighting that a major water quality program effective in reducing ambient dissolved inorganic nitrogen loadings could decrease coral bleaching probability across a range of temperatures predicted for the inshore Great Barrier Reef by the year 2100; and (b) a brief report on the conceptual model developed by CSIRO researchers that captures key relationships between reef condition and tourism operator viability to a Bayesian Belief Network.

Final Report on Project Activities, June 2010. Project 2.5ii.2 set out to provide a detailed process-based understanding of the performance of lowland tropical rainforest in concert with climatic measurements, with a view to coupling this understanding with future climate scenarios provided by MTSRF Project 2.5ii.1 to predict possible influences of climate change on the Daintree lowland rainforest of far northern Queensland over the next century. This report includes summaries of outputs of each of the five key objectives of this project: (a) Atmospheric fluxes; (b) Plant physiology; (c) Fluxes of carbon and water; (d) flowering/fruiting phenology; and (e) Insect populations and biodiversity.

A workshop was held with Burdekin Dry Tropics staff in January 2008 to review the current sate of knowledge of aquatic systems in the Burdekin catchment, to develop conceptual models of biophysical processes in Burdekin waterways, and to identify potential partnerships between MTSRF research programs and Board research needs.

This milestone report outlines the results of the first year of commercial fisheries observer surveys. In total 91 days of commercial inshore fishing was observed. The results indicate a wide range of shark and fish species are caught by commercial fishers. Key shark species include blacktip, spot-tail, scalloped hammerhead, milk and whitecheek sharks. All of these species are currently the focus of life history investigations by students as part of this project. Key fish species include grey mackerel, threadfins (blue and king), barramundi and many others.
