About
Connecting science, communities, and Country
We bring together a network of more than 80 partners – including researchers, industry associations, Traditional Owners, foundations, environmental managers, and community organisations. This collaborative network delivers exceptional expertise and local knowledge.
The RRRC is a not-for-profit public company limited by guarantee, operating under Australian Government financial regulations with independently audited annual reporting. Established in 2006 as the successor to the Cooperative Research Centres for Reef, Rainforest and Torres Strait, the RRRC continues this legacy through accountability and good governance.
The RRRC works to create healthy environments, resilient communities and sustainable economies. We respond to the challenges of northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait through collaborative partnerships, innovative solutions and practical on-ground action.
The RRRC is governed by a diverse group of member organisations with a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and applied science. Their collective expertise guides our strategic direction, strengthens collaboration, and helps ensure our work delivers meaningful outcomes for communities and the environment.
Framework
Our unique engagement framework and role as a knowledge broker ensure that research findings are effectively delivered, understood, and applied by end users – maximising the return on investment in public-good research and achieving the best possible outcomes for northern Australia. Our approach is defined by agility, responsiveness, and efficient resource use. Outcomes include new knowledge, expanded expertise, increased community capacity, stronger local economies, new employment opportunities, improved management practices, and evidence to guide policy and management.

Awards
Our work has received national recognition for its innovation, scientific excellence and real-world impact. In 2023, we were awarded the National Banksia Biodiversity Award and the National Banksia Agriculture and Regional Development Award, recognising two major initiatives: the Crown-of-thorns starfish control program protecting the Great Barrier Reef, and collaborative water quality projects in the Mulgrave–Russell catchment that work directly with farmers to reduce nutrient runoff. These achievements were acknowledged in Federal Parliament as examples of collaborative environmental programs delivering environmental and regional benefits. We were also a finalist in the 2022 Australian Museum Eureka Prize, one of Australia’s most prestigious science awards.

People
Small team, big results
We are a small, high-performing team that delivers outcomes often beyond the reach of much larger organisations. Our size gives us the agility to respond quickly and work efficiently, while our deep expertise, extensive networks, and collaborative approach enable us to design, coordinate and deliver complex, multidisciplinary programs that connect science, communities and industry. Guided by integrity, innovation and respect for people and Country, we work to create healthy environments, thriving communities, resilient economies, and lasting outcomes for Northern Australia.
