RRRC programs achieve real results

28 July 2026
From small-scale research initiatives to large, multi-year management programs, the Reef & Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC) has built a reputation for connecting partners, sustaining collaborations, and delivering world-class solutions on time and on budget.
Government-funded programs
Since 2006, RRRC has conceived, managed, and delivered more than $600 million in environmental research and development across northern Australia. These complex, Australian Government–funded initiatives have generated new knowledge, practical tools, and management strategies that underpin the sustainable use of natural resources and have directly influenced policy at all levels of government.
National Environmental Science Program – Marine and Coastal Hub (2021–2027)
RRRC co-leads the northern node of the Marine and Coastal Hub (MaC), part of the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program (NESP Phase 2), alongside the University of Tasmania. Backed by $23.5 million in funding, the Hub brings together scientists, managers, Indigenous groups, industries, and communities to identify research priorities and deliver solutions for estuaries, reefs, coastal zones, and deep-water environments. RRRC’s role includes program coordination, financial management, knowledge brokering, and ensuring science is translated into clear, actionable outcomes.
National Environmental Science Program – Tropical Water Quality Hub (2014–2021)
With $31.98 million in funding, RRRC administered the Tropical Water Quality (TWQ) Hub, the largest of six NESP Phase 1 hubs. The TWQ Hub advanced understanding of catchment-to-coast processes affecting the Great Barrier Reef and delivered practical solutions to improve water quality. Research addressed land-use practices, ecosystem restoration, Indigenous partnerships, and water monitoring technologies, all co-designed with end-users to ensure relevance and uptake. The Hub made major contributions to achieving the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.
Reef Rescue Research and Development Water Quality Program (2011–2015)
RRRC managed the Reef Rescue R&D Water Quality Program, which trialled, validated, and implemented new farming practices to reduce pesticide, herbicide, and fertiliser runoff from agricultural lands. The program linked researchers with sugarcane, banana, and dairy industries to test and scale best practices, overcoming duplication and embedding results into extension services. The outcomes strengthened water quality management, improved landholder engagement, and laid groundwork for subsequent Reef Trust initiatives.
National Environmental Research Program – Tropical Ecosystems Hub (2011–2014)
The Tropical Ecosystems Hub (TE Hub), administered by RRRC, supported more than 240 scientists across 38 projects with $32 million in Commonwealth investment. Research focused on the Great Barrier Reef, Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, and Torres Strait, addressing biodiversity, climate resilience, water quality, and Traditional Owner management needs. RRRC ensured effective governance, communications, and stakeholder engagement, making research accessible and applicable for policy and practice.
Marine and Tropical Sciences Research Facility (2006–2010)
The $40 million Marine and Tropical Sciences Research Facility (MTSRF), managed by RRRC, delivered critical science for the Great Barrier Reef, Wet Tropics, and Torres Strait. Coordinating 300 scientists across 15 research providers and 40 end-user organisations, RRRC oversaw 20 large projects on issues ranging from Crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks to climate impacts on turtles, seagrass decline, and land-use effects on water quality. Outcomes included the creation of the eAtlas, improved zoning effectiveness, and practical conservation strategies still in use today.
