Pesticide residues in the Great Barrier Reef

Extract:  Australia's Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's most iconic World Heritage-listed ecosystems but is currently under threat from a range of environmental insults including climate change and pollution.  Recent research has shown that herbicides from agricultural runoff have been found in the GBR lagoon at concentrations capable of harming keystone marine plants.

Interview Transcript 'Save our ringtails'

Project 1.1.2 AIMS Doherty, P. (2007) Reef Check Australia Dive Operators' Workshop - Feedback
Reef Check Australia trains volunteers to coordinate community monitoring and reporting of the status and trends of 25 key reef tourism sites. Through regular visitation, Reef Check is able to resolve seasonal patterns and more closely observe phenomena such as outbreaks of pests and disease. Outputs from this community monitoring feeds into MTSRF Project 1.1.2. This document provides a report on several workshops convened by Reef Check in January and February of 2007 to gain dive operators' feedback on Reef Check activities and to review the current monitoring sites in light of operator knowledge. Seagrass Watch

Seagrass-Watch is the largest scientific, non-destructive, seagrass assessment and monitoring program in the world.  Since 1998, when the program commenced operations in Australia, Seagrass-Watch has now expanded internationally to eighteen countries.  Monitoring is currently occurring at over 205 sites.  Seagrass-Watch involves many MTSRF researchers.
