The fundamental structure of the overall MTSRF Research
Programme relies on the integration of information across its
research Themes, and the structuring of that information to be of
value to managers and other research users.
To that affect, the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre convened
a series of geographically based workshops over five days in
Townsville from 16-20 April 2007. The amalgamation of these
workshops formed the inaugural MTSRF Research Synthesis Conference
to facilitate the development of benchmark synthesis reports on the
work being conducted by the MTSRF. Due for completion by the
end of June 2007, the synthesis reports will provide a systems-wide
overview of our current state of knowledge and the natural assets
of North Queensland through the integration of biophysical studies
and social and economic research at the end of the first year of
operation.
Around 160 researchers, stakeholder representatives and
interested community members attended one or more of the three
Workshops over the five days:
-
Rainforests and Catchments Workshop - convened
on Monday, 16 and Tuesday, 17 April at the Holiday Inn,
Townsville;
-
Water Quality Workshop - convened on Wednesday,
18 April at Jupiters Hotel and Casino, Townsville; and
-
Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait Workshop -
convened Thursday, 19 and Friday, 20 April at Jupiters Hotel and
Casino, Townsville.

The RRRC encouraged managers and other research users to attend
the Conference to hear about and discuss the latest research being
conducted on the Great Barrier Reef, the Wet Tropics rainforests,
the Torres Strait, the quality of water flowing from catchments to
the reef and the effects of climate change on these unique natural
systems.
