Project Description and Objectives

For detailed descriptions of the outputs for this project for Year 4 (2009/2010) of the MTSRF Research Programme, see the Annual Research Plan.

There is an identified need within the MTSRF to broaden its engagement with Indigenous peoples within the Great Barrier Reef catchment and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

In order for the MTSRF (through the RRRC) to ensure the conservation and sustainable use and management of environmental assets within North Queensland, a dialogue must occur with Indigenous peoples which provides for meaningful engagement and the delivery of outcomes beyond the environment, to support broader outcomes associated with Indigenous people's needs at a community level. There are currently a number of processes being delivered to Indigenous communities but they seem to be uncoordinated and ad hoc.

This project aims to enhance emerging mechanisms to increase Indigenous people's engagement and meaningful involvement of research organisations by creating an Indigenous-specific second generation research directions report that reflects what is needed at the community level.  This report will identify new and innovative ways forward with a mutually beneficial approach.

To ensure that the research directions report is comprehensive the following outputs will be achieved:

  • Scope out how Indigenous natural resource management can be used to achieve community aspirations and environmental management outcomes via the provision of environmental services;

  • Map out existing Indigenous infrastructure and organisations;

  • Identify current Land and Sea management arrangements and programs;

  • Investigate appropriate research governance models, e.g the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health;

  • Undertake analysis of four case studies (Girringun Aboriginal Corporation, Chuula/Lochardt, Curtis Coast, Torres Strait Region) to demonstrate the above; and

  • Identify the content of the research directions report based on outcomes of above.

Major Project Outputs

The Annual Research Plans, or ARPs, outline the specific tasks, products, budgets and staff for each research project within each of the Research Themes and Programs of the MTSRF.  The ARPs also outline the key deliverables, or 'project milestones' (e.g. major reports, journal articles, communications products) to be achieved.

An ARP is developed for each operating year of the MTSRF (2006-2010).

Details of this and previous years' outputs from this project are included in each of the Annual Research Plans
