Project 5.10.2 - Communication, engagement and enhanced delivery for tourism operators in the Wet Tropics rainforests

Project Leader and Host Organisation

Tourism Tropical North Queensland
in association with Reef and Rainforest Research Centre Limited

Project Description and Objectives

For detailed descriptions of the outputs for this project for Year 4 (2009/2010) of the MTSRF Research Programme, see the Annual Research Plan.

In recognition of the fact that the North Queensland tourism industry is a major end user of MTSRF research conducted in the Wet Tropics rainforest ecosystems, there is a need for enhanced delivery of MTSRF results into this sector.  This should occur in line with the MTSRF's overarching plan to enhance science delivery.  In addition, dedicated facilitation of engagement between researchers and this industry is required, also within the context of the engagement system and framework fo the MTSRF.

This project involves principal activities carred out by TTNQ staff across the Townsville and Cairns nodes of the tourism industry.  TTNQ staff are expected to use their comprehensive knowledge of the North Queensland ecotourism industry to enhance the delivery of MTSRF information so that it benefits operators by improving the environmental sustainability of their management, policy or practice.

Key objectives of this project are to:

  • Develop and use mechanisms to enhance the delivery of research findings and uptake by the Tropical Ecotourism sector in North Queensland; and

  • Report on the success of these mechanisms in enhancing delivery.

A key deliverable of MTSRF Project 5.10.2, planetsaferesearch.com.au is a website designed to easily integrate with the MTSRF website but with the tourism industry and wider community in mind.  It targets these particular 'research users' with easy to understand, comprehensive summaries, fact sheets and news updates that highlight the outputs of MTSRF-funded research.

Major Project Outputs

The Annual Research Plans, or ARPs, outline the specific tasks, products, budgets and staff for each research project within each of the Research Themes and Programs of the MTSRF.  The ARPs also outline the key deliverables, or 'project milestones' (e.g. major reports, journal articles, communications products) to be achieved.

An ARP is developed for each operating year of the MTSRF (2006-2010).

Details of this and previous years' outputs from this project are included in each of the Annual Research Plans
