Project 4.9.3 - Impacts of urbanisation on North Queensland environments: management and remediation

Project Leader:  Professor Steve Turton, James Cook University

Project 4.9.3 will develop increased understanding of impacts of rapid urban, peri-urban and rural development on Wet Tropics ecosystems and linked socio-economic systems, together with mitigation strategies for minimising or reversing adverse trends.  The Project is linked with terrestrial components of Program 6 (Threatening Processes and Invasives) and Program 7 (Water Quality).  These links will feed into the Integrated Report Card process.

Key focuses of this Project are linear community infrastructure impacts and mitigation and riparian vegetation - modeling of quality and habitat connectivity in urban and rural areas.

Project 4.9.3 JCU Goosem, M. et al. (2007) Nocturnal noise levels and edge impacts on amphibian habitats adjacent to Kuranda Range road
This research aims to fill knowledge gaps regarding nocturnal traffic noise and its impacts on amphibians, and consists of three core research areas: (a) to examine potential amphibian avoidance of habitat adjacent to the Kuranda Range road in comparison with areas further into the forest; (b) to analyse whether frequency shifts in amphibian calls occurs at the edge of the Kuranda Range road in comparison to calls recorded in the forest interior; and (c) to undertake systematic nocturnal noise recording near Streets and Avondale Creeks on the current road and in identified 'acoustic refugia' along those streams.
