The Catchment to Reef joint program was conceived to address
problems raised in a number of forums, including the Reef Water
Quality Protection Plan. At about the time these documents
appeared, the opportunity arose for the Rainforest CRC and CRC Reef
to apply for supplementary funding. The two agencies
collaborated to develop the joint program, which received funding
for three years from July 2003. Due to delays in finalising
contracts, the program did not commence until February 2004, and so
the results reported here relate to just over two years' work, and
consequently are incomplete. Nevertheless, the general thrust
of the work is continuing under the Catchment to Reef banner and
subsequently within the Marine and Tropical Sciences Research
Facility, which is broadly taking up research where the CRCs have
