The Catchment to Reef Program released a
full colour, eight-page booklet and poster designed to educate the
community about the importance of managing coastal catchments to
maintain the health and integrity of the Great Barrier Reef.
"Are you connected?" is the question asked by the
authors of the guide, which describes the natural connections
between plant and animal species and waterways, and why these links
are important for our lifestyle, as well as our grazing,
agriculture, fishing and tourism industries.
The booklet also summarises how ecological
connectivity, involving everything from bacteria to barramundi,
provides 'ecosystem services' such as fertile soil, clean water and
clean air. The poster and booklet may be downloaded and used for
educational purposes.
The Program also produced a sixteen-page booklet
entitled Nutrients, Catchments and Reefs: A guide to
nutrients in your landscape. The Great Barrier Reef
and its catchments are an inter-connected system. The
waterways that connect the land and sea transport the nutrients
essential to maintaining a healthy environment and economy.
This booklet introduces two of the most important nutrients in our
environment - nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) - and shows the role
and power of nutrients in natural processes. The booklet also
shows how human activities have changed the balance of these
nutrients in the environment, and how best practice land use can
improve both environmental health and productivity.
